About & FAQ’s

James McKnight.

Thanks so much for visiting my website and viewing my work!

If you’re looking for a makeup artist in Birmingham and the wider midlands area to make you look and feel the ultimate version of yourself, you’ve found him!

In this section of the website im delighted to answer some of my frequently Asked Questions which I hope you find useful. If you require any further information and to let me know all about your makeup requirements please do get in touch via my contact form and I’ll be more than happy to help.

How long have you been a makeup artist for?

I have been a professional makeup artist for approaching 20 years and in that time been fortunate enough to bring my makeup magic to thousands of clients all over the world working in bridal makeup, beauty, editorial and fashion and with some of the world’s leading luxury makeup brands as both an international makeup artist and lead trainer.

Where did you train?

Primarily, I am a self-taught makeup artist. The landscape now in terms of resources, information and inspiration is a whole world away from when I was beginning to learn my craft.  I was fortunate to begin my makeup journey working for brands such as Bobbi Brown and Estee Lauder which gave me a wealth of knowledge and understanding of makeup and many years of on counter experience working on clients of all different makeup styles, ages, skin concerns and everything that goes with working on a wide section of the public.  I don’t believe in trends, fads or “makeup hacks”.  I believe in classic, timeless makeup techniques that professionals have always used to enhance, define and make you feel your most confident and beautiful.

What is your style of makeup?

The ultimate version of you.   What is natural to one person will be full on glamour to another and vice versa.  Its my job to look at you as an individual, understand what your personal style is then translating that into a makeup look that makes you look and feel amazing.    While every bride is different, if I had to say what my favourite style is it would be classic, fresh and glowing bridal makeup with a little sprinkle of sexy.  If you can’t look a little bit sexy on your wedding day, when can you?

What areas do you cover?

I am based in Birmingham and cover the surrounding midlands areas including Solihull, Sutton Coldfield, Coventry, Dudley and Wolverhampton. I am happy to travel wherever I am needed although this may incur an additional travel charge if its outside of the West Midlands.

How soon should I book in advance?

For bridal makeup work I often get booked up to 2 years in advance so my advice would be as soon as your date is confirmed  – please do get in touch and secure your date, especially in peak season (April – September)   For last minute brides, please do still enquire and I may still be able to assist or recommend another artist who I have worked with previously.

For special occasions please book in as soon as possible as weekend appointments are especially limited.

Makeup lessons or other training and makeup education commitment please do get in touch to discuss your requirements and we will arrange a suitable date.

Do I need a makeup trial

Absolutely. The wedding trial is for us to meet and build a relationship, I am always honoured to be part of your big day and as part of that it is important you are with a Bridal Makeup artist who understands you, makes you feel fabulous and will give you the exact look you want.

I usually suggest you have your trial when you have an event or night out to go to so you can see for yourself its staying power, the beautiful photographic effect and also that the products I use are suitable for your skin. I have never had a client have an allergic reaction to any of the products I have used in all my years of doing makeup and after making up the faces of thousands of women but I would ideally never take the risk on the day itself.

On some very rare occasions, due to distance restrictions or for last minute brides, a trial is not always possible. In these cases the bride has usually been referred to me on recommendation by a friend or a previous client however I would urge the bride to view my portfolio and ensure she is happy with my style of makeup and previous work and I would conduct an in depth consultation over the phone before the big day to establish the above.
